Through his unique brand of chess outreach, Donald Colbert has reinvigorated premiere chess tournaments in collaboration with some of the top minds in scholastic chess for more than 40 years. Don's first foray into chess promotion was in 1977 with the Newport Open, a successful tournament with around 150 players. In 1998, competing at the World Open led to the opportunity to meet the world's foremost chess organizer, Bill Gochberg. Subsequently, they partnered to create the Foxwoods Chess Tournament, which was inaugurated in 1999 and quickly became one of America's top chess tournaments.
Former RI Chess Association President Donald L. Colbert Jr. has revived his creation, the Foxwoods Chess Open, this Spring in collaboration with the Continental Chess Association, to the delight of the chess world!
Foxwoods has offered unrivaled playing conditions mainly because Don is an active tournament player who has not only created chess tournaments and festivals for chess enrichment to students in Rhode Island and Connecticut, but he also created a world class jewel in international chess competition at Foxwoods. Grandmasters and players of all strengths know Donald's long commitment to the highest levels of competition in his tournament, allowing aspiring players to achieve Grandmaster Norms in what many players used to call the "Wimbledon of Chess" and will undoubtedly do so again!
The chess world has never been the same since David Mckay Vest entered the scene. David began playing chess in the 70's with unbridled enthusiasm. After elevating his play and earning the rank of Life Master, he became well known and feared for his creative, explosive play, cowering opponents by threatening to blow up chess positions and send games in to chaotic areas that David thrives in. One example is that Mr. Vest loves to play Ng8!? after e4, Nf6.
Being also interested in philosophy, and helped by his study of chess, David discovered a new philosophy called Emergence, which was not long after he played a chess game in which his King seemed to "emerge" in the center of the board to control the game and score a victory. The philosophy is about humanity discovering the true center of their existence and using it to revitalize themselves. He wrote a book called "The Emergence" which explains it in more detail. You can find out more about the book on his website AirshipIdea.com.
